A few months back I noticed that my Flickr photos had received over 50,000 views. Today the total is over 80,000, which shows that there are a lot of curious people out there, trawling the internet looking for interesting stuff.
What is even more remarkable is that some of my photos are linked to Google Earth from Panoramio: one photo alone has received 12,451 views. It’s a photo I took on the Pakistan/Afghanistan border many years ago when I was travelling through the region, and it is likely that there are not many photos posted in that location on Google Earth. The reason the photo seems popular is most likely a combination of newsworthy location and scarcity of competing photos, but it still shows the reach of tools like Google Earth, and their ability to act as a resource for anyone with an internet connection.
