Human rights, ancient and modern

Just saw this on the BBC website. The British Museum have been promising Iran the loan of an ancient Babylonian text, written on a clay cylinder. Apparently the BM went back on its promise, and Tehran was up in arms about it. The loan will now go ahead.

Interesting that this object has caused feelings to run so high. The text contains a declaration of tolerance towards the various religions of the ancient king’s population, which seems particularly appropriate today (and nearly 3000 years after it was written).
